The Current Shortage and Future Development Direction of Jet Mill

The jet mill can superfinely process materials that cannot be pulverized by ordinary mills, and is especially suitable for processing those products that strictly limit the maximum particle size and require a narrow distribution.

Compared with mechanical mills, jet mills has higher crushing strength and higher utilization rate which can be reached by 2%-10% via jet mills while 0.6% via ordinary mills. It has simple structure, can perform aseptic effect, and is easy to clean. The product size after crushing is fine, up to several microns or even sub microns, and the particles are regular with smooth surface. In addition, the jet mill can realize the combined operation of crushing and drying, crushing and mixing, crushing and chemical reaction in the machine. Although the jet mill has obvious advantages, it also has shortcomings. For example, it has many auxiliary equipment and its cost is high. what’s more, materials to be crushed have limitations, such as materials with more oil, water and fiber are not easy to be crushed.

However, compared with other grinding equipment, air crushing equipment has low output and high energy consumption, which is suitable for processing products with high requirements and high added value. However, the impact of mill size on crushing efficiency makes the prospect of developing large-scale air crushing equipment very promising.

The medium used by the jet mill is generally dry oil-free air or superheated steam. In some special cases, to crush flammable and explosive materials, nitrogen and inert gas are used as working fluids. Different working fluids will have different jet velocity and pulverizing flow field. Using different media to improve the jet pulverization process will be an important research direction in the future.
